The choice depends on many factors, such as the model, the intended use (street, track etc.), your riding style, desired noise level, price etc. At Akrapovic we produce six lines of exhaust systems which differ in their physical properties, performance characteristics and purpose: Bolt-on, Slip-on, Sport Production, Racing, Evolution, and Street Legal. There are a lot of possibilities, but the final choice has to be made by the rider. For a more thorough description of the lines, click on the links under Product Lines.

How much performance improvement can I expect by purchasing an Akrapovic exhaust system?

Simply stating the final maximum horsepower rating is not enough; when we speak of increased power we also have to take the torque curve into account. Only by comparing both the power and torque curves can we form an accurate picture of the performance of a modified exhaust system in comparison to the stock system. When reading power and torque curves it is also important to take into account the nature of the increase (sharp, smooth) as well as the distribution of the increase over the rpm range of the engine. This is different for every model of bike as well as each line in the Akrapovic exhaust systems range.

The increase can be read in the segment where the motor reaches its peak power and torque output at certain rpms, which are not necessarily the motor's highest. It is also not necessary that the maximum power and torque readings for the modified system appear at the same rpms as the stock system's maximum output. (This is a good indicator of the contribution of the modified exhaust system, i.e. the increase of the range of the motor with the use of the modified system, and at the same time it shows the character of the modified system.) We can also read for maximum increased power, i.e. the greatest difference in the power output of the modified vs. the stock system.

The performance improvement of Akrapovic exhaust systems varies. The power increase for the Racing line is explosive and concentrated in the upper end of the rpm curve. Some models offer maximum increased power in the lower and middle sections, while still others smoothly enhance and increase the stock power curve throughout the entire rpm range. One characteristic common to all Akrapovic exhaust systems is a tendency to smooth out unpleasant fluctuations in stock power curves.

As already mentioned, the increase in power depends on the type of exhaust system and the type of motorcycle. The set-up of the stock bike also has to be taken into account, especially with regard to legal regulations (power restrictions etc.) for the specific market for which the bike was produced.

Several parameters affect the measurement of the performance of the engine of an individual motorcycle:

-immediate environmental factors (air temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, intake air velocity)

-state of the motorcycle (engine temp., condition of the rear tire, chain or shaft drive)

-type of measuring equipment

-percentage error which appeared in the building of the engine

In addition to all this, you have to be able to maintain the same conditions for quite some time, which is unfortunately impossible. Because of this, various correction factors are employed to compensate for different influences, but none of them is capable of properly calculating all of the changes which occur during the measuring period. It makes no sense to compare two diagrams measured on two different dynos. Only a difference measured on the same bike on the same dyno under the same conditions counts.

We must emphasize that we have not taken into account the use of special engine parts for improving the engine's power output in combination with our exhaust systems. All of our measurements were made using stock factory engine set-ups (with certain exceptions).

Since the measurements of Akrapovic exhaust systems were obtained using stock engines and compared with those of stock exhaust systems, the quality of the stock exhaust systems is also an important factor in the final results of our measurements.

For the majority of our exhaust systems we offer a dynograph which shows performance improvement in comparison with the stock exhaust system. The exception is the Evolution line, which was developed and tested on Superbike and Supersport factory machines. The flagship of the Akrapovic range, offering only the highest performance.

back to questions

I bought an Akrapovic exhaust system. Do I have to rejet the bike? Which jet kit do you recommend for use with your exhaust system?

The Bolt-On, Slip-On, Sport Production, Racing, Evolution and Street Legal lines are designed to function properly using the stock carburetor or electronic fuel injection set-ups. This means that no changes to the stock set-ups are necessary in order to use Akrapovic exhaust systems. Also, all of the performance specifications which we measure and list for each exhaust system model are based on stock set-ups. We assume full responsibility for the accuracy of these specifications. However, we also believe that it is possible to improve the original set-ups when our exhaust systems are used.

Of course, the market for tuning kits is extremely large, covering practically every motorcycle component. Tuning of the exhaust system includes the carburetor and EFI settings in addition to aftermarket components. There is a huge demand for this particular combination.

If you decide to rejet your bike in addition to purchasing an Akrapovic exhaust system, we recommend that you check out the range of products offered by the American company Dynojet. They have achieved excellent results with their carburetor and EFI jet kits, which they test themselves and which are specifically tuned for Akrapovic exhaust systems. However, they only cover certain parts of our range, so it’s best to make sure that Dynojet has a kit for your motorcycle and the Akrapovic exhaust system of your choice.

NOTE:
•The Akrapovic company assumes no responsibility for the performance specifications given by the Dynojet company or any other tuning company for their products!
•We guarantee only the accuracy of the performance characteristics given for Akrapovic exhaust systems, which are based on the motorcycles’ stock engine set-ups, and which are officially issued by the Akrapovic company.

IMPORTANT:
•Tuning of electronic fuel injection systems requires precision and care, since unlike carburetors there are many possible settings which could exceed the useful limit for the engine! This could eventually lead to decreased engine performance, i.e. damage to the engine. We assume no responsibility for the proper operation of Akrapovic exhaust systems in the case of rejetting the carburetor or EFI system. (We suggest that you start tuning using the presets given by the manufacturer).
•Never change the exhaust system and the jet's or EFI mapping at the same time.
•First replace the exhaust system, then the other items. Even when replacing the stock air filter with a modified filter, rejetting/remapping has to be performed.
•We suggest that all modifications be performed by authorized personnel.

What to do with models with EX-UP?

When the original exhaust system is dismounted, it is necessary to remove the cables from the servo (which changes the exhaust valve opening). However, the servo must stay connected to the harness and MUST NOT BE removed.

In some countries, some bikes are originally equipped with a lambda sensor (e.g. the CBR 900RR: the thread on the lambda connect is M12x1.25 and is not compatible with the lambda sensors of other manufacturers).

For all these special cases a detailed set of installation instructions are included with your Akrapovic exhaust system.

How loud is an Akrapovic exhaust system?

Akrapovic Bolt-on, Slip-on, Sport Production, Racing and Evolution line exhaust systems are louder than stock exhaust systems. Noise measurements are made following the standard procedure: 50 cm from the exhaust outlet at an angle of 45° to the side of the outlet.

Typical measured noise levels for individual product groups depend most of all on engine type and vary from:

92dB to 98dB (Slip-on, Bolt-on)

96dB to 99dB (SuperSport)

98dB to 102dB (Racing)

100dB to 103dB (Evolution)

The Street Legal series maintains the same noise levels as the stock exhaust systems. However, the color and the tone of the sound are changed, giving it a much sportier growl. The increase in performance is also less marked than with our other types of exhaust systems.

back to questions

Is the sound of the carbon outer sleeve muffler different from the titanium outer sleeve muffler? Is there any influence on performance?

No, neither the sound nor the performance is affected. The choice is purely aesthetic.

back to questions

How often do I have to change the damping wool? Is it necessary at all?

The durability of the damping material depends on the type of motorcycle, riding style, mileage etc. Normally, single and twin cylinder engines produce a stronger exhaust gases wave pulse and a higher temperature. Often, riding on a race track requires noise control.

The insulating material should be replaced when you notice any visual changes on the muffler sleeve material or when the muffler exceeds the noise limit. Please check the muffler visually before every season. In principle the damping wool should be replaced every 2 years.

back to questions

How much does an Akrapovic exhaust system weigh?

The weight of an Akrapovic exhaust system varies from line to line and from bike to bike.

Typical weights for individual product groups:

Bolt-on, Slip-on = 1.6 to 2.4 kg

SuperSport, Racing = 4.8 to 5.4 kg

Evolution (titanium) = 3.3 to 4.2 kg

Exact weights are given in the technical specifications for each exhaust system, along with a comparison with the weight of the stock exhaust.

Maintenance and cleaning.

It is very important to clean the exhaust system thoroughly after installation, as any dirt or debris will later be burned into the exhaust system. A contact cleaner can be used to clean the pipes, while for the titanium muffler outer sleeve we recommend using a multi-purpose spray lubricant (WD-40 or equivalent). The carbon-fiber outer sleeve should be wiped with a soft dry cloth.

WARNING:
Do not use automotive wheel cleaners or any cleaning products which contain acidic additives to clean the front rosettes of Akrapovic Bolt-On exhaust systems.

If such cleaning products are used damage occurs in the form of corrosion of the ALU front rosette, which leads to the breakage of the inner flange which the muffler outer sleeve is attached to.

In order to get rid of dirt and buildup more easily, such cleaners contain acids which react with, i.e. eat into, the surface. The reaction gradually increases over time, which has a major effect on aluminum, which is very susceptible to the effects of acids. The compound of aluminum, acid and water leads to the creation of the galvanic effect, which results in even greater damage. This problem is especially acute because the flange in question cannot be thoroughly sprayed with water and dried. At first the damage is undetectable, but the chemical reaction continues unseen.

My sticker is damaged. How can I get a new one?

First, contact your importer / dealer to get a new one.

IMPORTANT:

The sticker is very sensitive when heated for the first time. Clean the muffler surface with contact cleaner, and apply the sticker by pressing it with your fingers. You should run the bike to heat the muffler and check that there is no air left between the sleeve and the sticker. If the sticker tends to fall off when heated for the first time, press it back gently with a dry cloth. Do not use an aggressive cleaner when cleaning.

How long do I have to wait for delivery?

The goal of the Akrapovic company is to supply our customers with exhaust systems as fast as possible. However, due to certain logistical constraints prescribed by our production techniques, we have to program our delivery schedule in advance. If your supplier does not have a particular model Akrapovic exhaust system in stock, the normal delivery time is ca. 4 weeks from the date of order.

We are trying to reduce this delay period, as well as to encourage our representatives to maintain increased stocks of our most popular models.
